Metroclopramide, Clinical Pharmacology, RXlist:"Metoclopramide stimulates motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract without stimulating gastric, biliary, or pancreatic secretions. Its mode of action is unclear. It seems to sensitize tissues to the action of acetylcholine. The effect of metoclopramide on motility is not dependent on intact vagal innervation, but it can be abolished by anticholinergic drugs."

Metoclopramide, Proper Use, Health Central:"Take this medication as directed by the health care provider 1/2 hour before meals and at bedtime. Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as it is remembered unless it is too close to time for the next dose. In that case, skip it and take the next scheduled dose on time. Do not take a double dose."

Metoclopramide, Why Prescribed, Whole Health MD:"To prevent nausea and vomiting caused by anticancer medicines or to treat impaired emptying of food from the stomach (gastroparesis) as a complication of diabetes. Also used as a short-term treatment for heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux, a backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus)."

Metoclopramide, NEUROLOGICAL SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH UNNECESSARY USE OF METOCLOPRAMIDE IN CHILDREN, July 31,1994, King Khalid University Hospital:"Incidence of side effects of metoclopramide is 20%.1 Neurological symptoms such as oculogyric crisis and involuntary contractions of the eye muscles leading to upward conjugate gaze occur in about 1% of patients.2 Children and young adults are more prone to develop these symptoms, even after a single dose.3,4 Despite the fact that these effects disappear spontaneously and completely after discontinuation of this treatment, they create unnecessary anxiety for the patient, parents and health care personnel. This problem would not have emerged without the uncontrolled, and most of the time unnecessary, prescription of metoclopramide to young children. In this study, over a one-year period, we analyzed the clinical data of 24 children who presented with these manifestations after being prescribed metoclopramide for an acute illness."

Metoclopramide(Reglan), How should I use this medicine, MediResource:"Recommended adult dose ranges from 5 to 10 mg 3 or 4 times daily before meals. Children's dose (5-14 years) is 2.5 mg to 5 mg 3 times daily before meals."

Metoclopramide(Reglan), Why is this drug prescribed, Health Square:"Reglan increases the contractions of the stomach and small intestine, helping the passage of food. It is given to treat the symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis, a condition in which the stomach does not contract. These symptoms include vomiting, nausea, heartburn, feeling of indigestion, persistent fullness after meals, and appetite loss. Reglan is also used, for short periods, to treat heartburn in people with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus). In addition, it is given to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy and surgery."
