Haloperidol (Haldol)
interactions:healthsquare:"Extreme drowsiness and other potentially serious effects
can result if Haldol is combined with alcohol, narcotics, painkillers, sleeping
medications, or other drugs that slow down the central nervous system. If Haldol is
taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or
altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Haldol
with the following: Antiseizure drugs such as Dilantin or Tegretol, Antispasmodic drugs
such as Bentyl and Cogentin, Blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin, Certain
antidepressants, including Elavil, Tofranil, and Prozac, Epinephrine (EpiPen), Lithium
(Eskalith, Lithobid), Methyldopa (Aldomet), Propranolol (Inderal), Rifampin
(Rifadin)"
Haloperidol (Haldol) dosage
recommendations:psyweb:"Dosages: Actual dosage must be determined by a physician.
Oral: Start: 0.5mg to 2mg 2 or 3 times daily.
Increases: 0.5mg in 3 or 4 day intervals, as needed.
Maintenance: Low as possible in 24 hours.
Maximum: 100 mg in 24 hours.
Normal dosage:
If under 18 years of age, Only if under the care of a child psychiatrist!
18 to 60 years of age, 0.5mg to 30mg daily.
Over 60 years of age, Lower dosage increased cautiously."
Haloperidol (Haldol) side
effects:health-center.com:"Remember that only some people will experience side
effects--and that no one experiences side effects in exactly the same way. If you
experience any side effects, contact your doctor or clinician right away and continue
taking your medication. The following list may not contain all of the side effects
associated with this medication: Most common side effect drowsiness, blurred, dry
mouth, constipation
Infrequent side effects raised or lowered blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat, heart
attack, dizziness, decreased libido, impotence
Rare side effects/Risks jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin),
Parkinson-like reactions, lowered white blood cells, seizures, liver toxicity"
Haloperidol (Haldol)
warnings:mentalhealth.com:"Tardive Dyskinesia:
Tardive dyskinesia is known to occur in patients treated with neuroleptics with
antipsychotic properties and other drugs with substantial neuroleptic activity.
Although the dyskinetic syndrome may remit partially or completely if the medication is
withdrawn, it is irreversible in some patients. At the present time there is
uncertainty as to whether neuroleptic drugs differ in their potential to cause tardive
dyskinesia.
Since there is a significant prevalence in this syndrome associated with the use of
neuroleptic drugs, and since there is no known effective treatment, chronic use of
these drugs should generally be restricted to patients for whom neuroleptics are known
to be effective and for whom there is no alternative therapy available with better risk
acceptability. If manifestations of tardive dyskinesia are detected during the use of a
neuroleptic, the drug should be discontinued."
Haloperidol (Haldol)
overdose:rxlist:"While overdosage is less likely to occur with a parenteral than
with an oral medication, information pertaining to HALDOL (haloperidol) is presented,
modified only to reflect the extended duration of action of haloperidol decanoate.
Manifestations - In general, the symptoms of overdosage would be an exaggeration of
known pharmacologic effects and adverse reactions, the most prominent of which would
be: 1) severe extrapyramidal reactions, 2) hypotension, or 3) sedation. The patient
would appear comatose with respiratory depression and hypotension which could be severe
enough to produce a shock-like state. The extrapyramidal reactions would be manifested
by muscular weakness or rigidity"
Special considerations
while taking Haloperidol (Haldol):walnet.org:"This drug should be used only when
there is no other choice. Sudden death is a (rare) possibility with Haldol. This is one
of a group of psychiatric drugs which causes a serious and sometimes fatal reaction
called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. It may cause body temperature raising, rigid
muscles and coma (passing out), rapid heart beat and breathing, sweating, shaking and
seizures. The death rate is 20%. Haldol causes brain and eye damage with long-term use.
With epilepsy, it can change the pattern of seizures. This drug is eliminated in breast
milk and affects an unborn child. It should not be given to nursing or pregnant women.
Children are sensitive to the nervous system reactions of this drug. Avoid overheating
your body in the sun, saunas, hot baths, etc. Tell your nurse, doctor, pharmacist or
dentist about any other drugs you are taking before any new treatment. Check with them
before you take any medicine, even if it isn't a prescription drug. There is no known
treatment for tardive dyskinesia (TD). The brain damage done with this drug can be
permanent. If symptoms appear, the drug must be stopped. One of the early signs of TD
is a "worm-like" movement of the tongue. Stop the drug and see your doctor immediately
if this happens to you"
Haloperidol (Haldol)
precautions:whatmeds.com:"Haloperidol should only be used in children and
adolescents under 18 who are under the care of a child psychiatrist. Haloperidol may
cause dizziness and/or drowsiness. Patients taking it should not drive or operate heavy
machinery until the full effects on alertness are known. Patients can be more sensitive
to UV light while taking Haloperidol and should always wear a sunscreen SPF 15 or more
and wear sunglasses when outdoors or in direct sunlight. Patients should not be exposed
to artificial sunlight such as tanning booths or sun lamps. This drug can reduce a
patient’s ability to withstand extreme heat or cold. Patients should be cautious when
exercising in hot weather, and should dress appropriately for cold weather and avoid
excessive exposure to cold. For Nursing Mothers: Do not take if you are
breast-feeding"
Instructions for taking
Haloperidol (Haldol):Yahoo drug index:"Haldol may be taken with food or after
eating. If taking Haldol in a liquid concentrate form, you will need to dilute it with
milk or water. You should not take Haldol with coffee, tea, or other caffeinated
beverages, or with alcohol. Haldol causes dry mouth. Sucking on a hard candy or ice
chips may help alleviate the problem. --If you miss a dose...Take it as soon as you
remember. Take the rest of the doses for that day at equally spaced intervals. Do not
take 2 doses at once. --Storage instructions...Store away from heat, light, and
moisture in a tightly closed container. Do not freeze the liquid"
Haloperidol (Haldol)
description:healthyplace.com:"Haloperidol (Haldol) is an antipsychotic medication
used to treat schizophrenia. It is also used to control certain symptoms associated
with Tourette's disorder. Haloperidol is a butyropherone derivative with antipsychotic
properties that has been considered particularly effective in the management of
hyperactivity, agitation, and mania. Haloperidol is an effective neuroleptic and also
possesses antiemetic properties; it has a marked tendency to provoke extrapyramidal
effects and has relatively weak alpha-adrenolytic properties. It may also exhibit
hypothermic and anorexiant effects and potentiate the action of barbiturates, general
anesthetics, and other CNS depressant drugs." ******************************************************
