Repronex, Repronex (menotropins) Who is this
drug for? Drugdigest.org:"MENOTROPINS (Pergonal®, Humegon®,
Repronex®), is a combination of two hormones,
called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
and luteinizing hormone (LH). Both of these
hormones occur naturally in both men and
women, and help with fertility. In men, these
hormones can help stimulate the development
of sperm. In women, these hormones stimulate
the development of eggs within the ovary.
To increase a woman's chance of getting pregnant,
menotropins are used in combination with
other fertility drugs. Menotropins are also
used for in vitro fertilization ("test
tube baby") programs. Menotropins are
also known by the name "HMG". Generic
menotropins injections are not yet available.
Repronex, Pregnancy & special instructions
while on this drug, Drugstore.com:"KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY appointments
while you are using this medicine. DO NOT
DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING
ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know
how you react to this medicine. Using this
medicine alone, with other medicines, or
with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive
or to perform other potentially dangerous
tasks. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing;
tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids,
face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or
hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not
take any more doses of this medicine unless
your doctor tells you to do so. USING THIS
MEDICINE may result in multiple pregnancy
(twins, etc.). Discuss this possibility with
your doctor. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if
you are or become pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT
THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your
doctor. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS
EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL
BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this
medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist
to discuss the risks to your baby."
Repronex, Warnings and Precautions, Ferring
Pharmaceuticals:"Repronex® is a drug that should only
be used by physicians who are thoroughly
familiar with infertility problems. It is
a potent gonadotropic substance capable of
causing mild to severe adverse reactions
in women. Gonadotropin therapy requires a
certain time commitment by physicians and
supportive health professionals, and its
use requires the availability of appropriate
monitoring facilities (see PRECAUTIONS -
Laboratory Tests). In female patients it
must be used with a great deal of care.
Repronex, When not to use Repronex (Injection),
Healthdigest.org:"You should not use this medicine if
you have had an allergic reaction to menotropins,
are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have unusual
vaginal bleeding, thyroid disorders, cysts
on the ovaries, enlarged ovaries, or primary
testicular failure.
Menotropins, Most serious complication of
this drug, IVFCenter.net:"The most common side-effect would
be soreness and/or swelling at the injection
site. However, Menotropins are potent drugs
which can also cause serious side effects
- most of which are related to potential
hyperstimulation of the ovary. About 5-10%
of women will develop mild to moderate uncomplicated
ovarian enlargement, sometimes accompanied
by abdominal swelling or abdominal pain.
This condition will usually go away without
treatment within two or three weeks.
Menotropins, Possible Side Effects, Mayoclinic.com:"Check with your doctor as soon as
possible if any of the following side effects
occur: After you stop using this medicine, your body may need time to adjust. The
length of time this takes depends on the
amount of medicine you were using and how
long you used it. During this period of time
check with your doctor if you notice any
of the following side effects: For females
only: Abdominal or stomach pain (severe);
bloating (moderate to severe); decreased
amount of urine; feeling of indigestion;
nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (continuing
or severe); pelvic pain (severe); shortness
of breath; weight gain (rapid). Other side
effects not listed above may also occur in
some patients. If you notice any other effects,
check with your doctor.
Menotropins, What does my medication look
like?, Peacehealth.com:"Menotropins is available with a prescription
under the brand names Pergonal and Humegon.
Other brand or generic formulations may also
be available. Ask your pharmacist any questions
you have about this medication, especially
if it is new to you.
Repronex, Dosage and Adminsitration of drug,
Rxlist.com:"Infertile patients with oligo-anovulation:
The dose of Repronex® to stimulate development
of ovarian follicles must be individualized
for each patient. The lowest dose consistent
with achieving good results based on clinical
experience and reported clinical data should
be used.
Menotropins, If you miss a dose, Webmd.com:"Contact your doctor if you miss a dose
of menotropins. Do not use a double dose
of this medication without first talking
to your doctor.

Menotropins, How does it work? Drugs.com:"Menotropins are an equal mixture of
the naturally occurring follicle-stimulating
hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).
FSH and LH are important for the development
of follicles (eggs) produced by the ovaries
and for the development of sperm. Menotropins
are used to stimulate ovulation (the release
of an egg) when a woman's ovaries can produce
a follicle but hormonal stimulation is deficient.
Menotropins are also used to stimulate the
development of multiple eggs for in vitro
fertilization. Likewise, menotropins are
used to stimulate the production of sperm
in men who have functioning testes but in
whom hormonal stimulation is deficient. Menotropins
may also be used for purposes other than
those listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I
should know about menotropins? Menotropins may increase the likelihood of
multiple births. Multiple births may carry
additional risk both for the mother and for
the fetuses."

Hypersensitivity/Anaphylactic Reactions
Hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions associated
with menotropins administration have been
reported in some patients. These reactions
presented as generalized urticaria, facial
edema, angioneurotic edema, and/or dyspnea
suggestive of laryngeal edema. The relationship
of these symptoms to uncharacterized urinary
proteins is uncertain.

Severe ovarian hyperstimulation is rare but
about 0.5% of women on menotropin therapy
will develop this more serious medical problem.
Pronounced enlargement of the ovary, collection
of fluid in the abdomen and lungs, low abdominal
pain, and potential rupture of the ovary
characterize severe hyperstimulation and
may require hospitalization. Symptoms usually
become evident about one week after the hCG
injection. This condition is followed carefully
with serial ultrasounds, blood work and a
close monitoring of urinary output. Bed rest
is important to prevent the above ovarian
complications. Hospitalization is necessary
in severe cases. Occasionally drawing fluid
from the chest or abdominal cavity helps.
Severe hyperstimulation is best managed by
prevention i.e the hCG is withheld when there
is a high risk of hyperstimulation."
