Vicodin, Health Relationships Website:"Casey needed surgery next week and as a recovering addict she came to me with some questions about a drug her physician prescribed for pain after the surgery. "Dr. Ross has prescribed Lortab and I donít know what it is or if it will be ok for me to take, but I sure donít want to be in pain." ******************************************************, Vicodin:Hydrocodone bitartrate is an opioid analgesic and antitussive and occurs as fine white crystals or as a crystalline powder. It is affected by light. The chemical name is: 4,5a-epoxy-3-methoxy-17-methylmorphinan-6-one tartrate (1:1) hydrate (2:5).

Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen, University of Iowa, College of Nursing:"Hydrocodone is similar to codeine in its action, working on the central nervous system and smooth muscle. It is believed to relate to opiate receptors in the central nervous system. Acetaminophen works in the periphery as an analgesic but also has antipyretic effects. It is absorbed rapidly in the GI tract and is distributed to most tissue areas in the body. Acetaminophen inhibits the production of prostaglandin which then may cause irritation to the stomach."
