Ipratropium Bromide: Is classified as a: Anticholinergic, Antimuscarinic Agent, Parasympatholytic

Ipratropium bromide, Indications, RXlist:"Ipratropium bromide inhalation solution administered either alone or with other bronchodilators, especially beta adrenergics, is indicated as a bronchodilator for maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema."
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/ipratrop_ids.htm

******************************************************

Ipratropium bromide, Allergies, Aventis:"Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic agent that inhibits mucus secretion and can decrease rhinorrhea associated with many types of rhinitis. It does not relieve sneezing, itching or nasal congestion. It is administered intranasally and is not effectively absorbed into the bloodstream, so it has only local side effects, including minimal wheezing and nasal dryness."

Ipratropium bromide, Library, What you need to know about Asthma:"Known as Atrovent in the United States and Canada, Ipratropium Bromide is another long term bronchodilator. Ipratropium is NOT A "RESCUE MEDICATION!" and will not stop an asthma attack once it's started. It can take up to several weeks of taking this medication to achieve the full benefits."
http://asthma.about.com/library/weekly/aa062199.htm

******************************************************

Ipratropium bromide, Drug class and Mechanism:"Ipratropium bromide is a bronchodilator that dilates the bronchi in the lungs. It is used in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cholinergic nerves going to the lungs cause narrowing of the bronchi by stimulating the muscles surrounding the bronchi to contract. An "anti-cholinergic" effect of ipratropium bromide blocks the effect of the cholinergic nerves, causing the muscles to relax and the bronchi to dilate. When inhaled, ipratropium bromide goes directly to the airways, and very little is absorbed into the body."

******************************************************

Ipratropium bromide, How should this medication be used, MEDLINEplus:"Ipratropium comes as a solution and an aerosol to inhale by mouth. It usually is inhaled three or four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use ipratropium exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may instruct you to take additional puffs if needed. However, do not use more than 12 puffs in 24 hours."

Ipratropium bromide, Dry Powder Ipratropium Bromide Is As Safe and Effective As Metered-Dose Inhaler Formulation: A Cumulative Dose-Response Study in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients, February 2002, RESPIRATORY CARE:"Ipratropium bromide is a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic compound chemically related to atropine. Ipratropium bromide induces bronchodilation through a selective parasympathetic blockade of the bronchial muscarinic receptors. Since cholinergic tone substantially contributes to airway narrowing in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ipratropium bromide is a mainstay in the management of those patients. The bronchodilator action of ipratropium bromide is dose-dependent, and the recommended dose is not a definite dose but rather a range of doses, depending on the subject, the disease, and the severity of the disease."

******************************************************

Ipratropium bromide, Other Precautions, MediResource:"Ipratropium solution in the 20 mL multidose bottle contains preservatives (benzalkonium chloride and disodium ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid - EDTA-disodium). It has been reported that these preservatives may cause a worsening of breathing in some patients with hyperreactive airways."
